I'm sitting in my living room with [info]sophinisba and we're both browsing through LJ while [info]hanarobi is taking a shower. I took [info]claudia603 to the airport a few hours ago.

We had a really good time at the beach and are thinking this might be a good tradition, New Years at the beach. There was walking on the beach, [info]hanarobi bought a kite and named it Phillipe and he flew high and gracefully. There was a lot of weather, lots of wind and wild waves and we had a perfect view for it all from our balcony.

We watched the final few episodes of Battlestar Galactica, so now all of us (me, [info]beruscats, [info]sophinisba, [info]claudia603 and [info]hanarobi) are all done with it so can talk about it to our heart's content. We loved it all so much and didn't want it to end even though there was so much sadness. Helo is very hot. We are all agreed that we still don't understand much of anything and that more viewings are required.

So a big thanks to [info]gentlehobbit for having written so passionately about the show. I know that for some of us, her posts are what spurred us to watch it.

In a little while [info]hanarobi and I are going to take [info]sophinisba to her friend L's and then it will just be us two and we are going to watch Dexter Season 3.

Final total for reading for the year is either 56 or 57 books finished. I think I might have screwed up my counting but I don't want to count again because I'd probably come up with a totally different number :-)

I left commenting on “The End of Time” until today because the first part left me perplexed and I hoped that the second half would be so brilliant that everything would miraculously fall into place.

I did some writing! It's not cheerful though. I was watching "The Duchess and the Devil" and I though, gee, this isn't nearly angsty enough, so I wrote some suicidal!Archie for the hell of it. Poor Archie, maybe I'll write him some recovery scenes next.

Series: Hornblower (TV movieverse)
Title: The Dark of the Night
Episode: The Duchess and the Devil
Rating: G
Genre: Angst, vignette

Happy New Year, dear Flist! I went to a low-key party last night and spent much of it giggling with an eight-year-old, making up silly stories from magazines, and playing Wii sport. Then I went home and caught the last minute of ROTK on TV. 'Well, I'm back.' Yeah! Might watch the whole thing properly this weekend when I get a chance.

Now I've meant to post this F/S ficlet for ages but today's as good a day as any. Ahem...

As one of my presents this year I got a book called “I Avatar: The Culture and Consequences of Having a Second Life” by Mark Stephenson Meadows. This has been on my Amazon Wishlist since the time of my Dissertation (I was extrapolating the current difficulties we have in ascribing ownership of electronic information and thus responsibility for the associated legal obligations to a situation where virtual worlds had become independent nations with their own citizens and legal systems) and it has finally come down in price enough for someone to buy it for me.

Anyway, the main thrust of the book is not the issue here; I’m just interested in your reaction to something the author says in the introductory chapters about his online identity, whose name was Pighed:

… and when I met Tiffany she called me Pighed and I kind of liked that. Somehow my invented self was becoming a part of my real self, as if I’d somehow caused a dream to breathe.

... so, did your internet avatar start off as someone separate from you or as just a handy identifier and if the former, do you get a secret kick out of the fact that some people think of you by that name even though they don't know what it represents/represented to you?

Happy Birthday, SS! I'm just making it under the wire for your time zone, I think. I hope you had a good birthday!

Warning! - Slight spoilers for Avatar and Doctor Who below. Proceed with caution!

I am again catching up with weeks of posts. I’ve either had nothing to say or too much to fit into the time I could spare to write it – the end result being, I’ve posted nothing in months. My thanks to those of you who have so diligently posted to keep the rest of us up to date.

Life continues, much as it has been with little changing except that my children are becoming young adults and I am getting old. I stopped feeling like I was getting older when I turned 21, but I guess my body didn’t get the message. It sucks.

Christmas (or as my daughter calls it, Hogswatch) was pretty good. I made sure I got myself a present (just in case) and all my gifts went over well. My daughter even liked the gifts we gave her – astonishing!

Watched the first half of the last episode of the Tennant Doctor Who episodes. It was… interesting. The Master was a lot more compelling than the Doctor in it. Hmmm… I’m hoping they can hit the note they did with last year’s finale – when the Time Lord / human metacrisis stayed with Rose – but I’m not holding my breath.

Finally, I’m sort of surprised no one in my flist mentioned Avatar. I had determined not to spoil myself too much and was pleased to see it for the first time as a relatively blank slate. Sort of what I couldn’t do with LOTR – LOL! And it worked – I loved the film! I even saw it twice (the second time is the best!) which is something I haven’t done since LOTR. It’s a simple story, but very empathetically done. And the tree huggers beat the crap out of the corporate shills! Epic!

And here begins the political rant... )
